James Mcmurtry
James McMurtry is a recognized and reputed singer/songwriter/guitarist. He was born on March 18, 1962, in Fort Worth, Texas. His comes from a very literary family, his father Larry McMurtry is the author Lonesome Dove and is also a screen writer. It was his father who exposed McMurtry to music, at his father's home McMurtry listened to a lot of the records by Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff. His mother, a university English professor exposed him to the music of Kris Kristofferson.
James McMurtry is well known for his hard-edged character sketches, James got his first guitar at age seven, and his mother taught him how to play it. McMurtry's musical talent started pouring while he was still a student at the University of Arizona. He continued his passion for music when he returning home and took the job of a bartender.

|
James composed his first song when he was 25 years old. For his effort he won honors at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1987. He released his debut album on Columbia Records in 1989. The album comprised of mostly original material and was produced by John Mellencamp. H also collaborated with Larry on the screenplay of the movie "Falling From Grace." Although he is acknowledged as a compelling singer/songwriter, he has also proved to everyone that he is a master guitarist. His peers and critics consider him as one of the finest song writers of his generation. Because of his reputation as a renowned lyricist, his guitar skills are sometimes overshadowed.
After traveling for a while and earning his living by painting houses and tending bars and even trying his hand at acting, McMurtry ended up in Texas, working in San Antonio's entertainment district. His first step to success came when he won an award in the New Folk category at the 1987 Kerrville Folk Festival. This minor victory was followed by a Columbia contract in 1989. This led to the McMurtry's first three albums: "Too Long in the Wasteland," "Candyland" and "Where'd You Hide the Body." He ended his run at Columbia in 1996 and signed up with Sugar Hill Records. The album "It had to Happen" released in 1997 won The American Indie Award. Next came "Walk Between the Raindrops" in 1998, followed in 2002 by "St. Mary of the Woods." In April 2004, Compadre Records released "Live In Aught-Three," in April 2004, the album was recorded on tour with the Heartless Bastards.
