Jackson Browne

Background: Jackson Browne is now into his third decade as a recording artist, undoubtedly a tribute to his talent at songwriting. Jackson Browne was utilizing those talents long before he was in the public eye. He started his music career as a publisher, and wrote songs for other artists. Some of his songs were performed by Tom Rush, The Eagles, Linda Rondstadt, The Byrds, Steve Noonan, Natalie Merchant, and Richie Havens. He actually wrote The Eagles smash hit "Take It Easy" with Glen Frey. You could say that Jackson Browne's music was heard by millions before they knew who he was. That would change shortly though. In 1966, Jackson decided to take his songwriting skills into the public eye. He joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and took his shot at actually performing his music, not just writing it for other people.
Jackson's band career was short lived however. A new decade brought a new career for the talented songwriter. In 1971, he signed with Asylum Records and released his first solo album entitled "Jackson Browne". The album, officially released in 1972 was the public's introduction to his powerful lyrics and thought provoking ideas. Little did they, or he for that matter, know that he would turn into such an important artist, and not only for his music. In any event his albums did very well. He released two albums that were both hailed as instant classics "The Pretender" and "Running on Empty". "The Pretender" was his first album to crack the top 10. Sadly though, he didn't have much time to celebrate the success, for his beloved wife committed suicide that March.

Artist Biography - Jackson Browne

"Running on Empty" released in 1978 was a live album that went to number three on the charts. Despite all his success, Jackson was still found time to support causes he believed in. Jackson was behind two very substantial political causes in the late 70's. He was a board member and co founder of MUSE, or Musicians United for Safe Energy, which included many other popular artists at the time. He also helped organize the No Nukes concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Obviously, Jackson was gaining more and more popularity as an artist. In 1980, he released "Hold Out", which debuted at number 1. He also scored a hit with the single "Somebody's Baby" from the motion picture soundtrack from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". With momentum behind him, he released one more album called "Lawyers in Love" before taking to a trip to Nicaragua in 1984. Inspired by the experience, he released "Lives In The Balance" upon his return. Keeping his political conscious, he participated in the Conspiracy of Hope tour put on by Amnesty International in 1986.
It seemed as if his political influence outweighed his musical one at this point. He released "World of Motion" next in 1989 but it was his first album that didn't go gold or platinum or have a single that even made the charts. This prompted Jackson to take a step out of the spotlight to regroup. He resurfaced in 1993 with "I'm Alive". The album had no political overtones, which was a big change for him.
He continued to release albums through the nineties and into the new millennium with moderate success. His hard work paid off though in 2004 when Jackson Browne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
