Jacks Mannequin
Jack's Mannequin is the piano rock band that has made itself known in the alternative rock genre. The group, from Orange County, was originally a side project of Andrew McMahon from Something Corporate, but after 2006 the group became his main band. Jack's Mannequin was formed in 2004 and released its first album, Formation and Everything in Transit in August 2005. Tickets for the group's concerts sold well, making the side project more than just a one-time thing.
The group is made up of McMahon, Bobby "Raw" Anderson, Jay McMillan, and Jon "Dr. J" Sullivan. The band name came from a song title, Dear Jack, and the group name McMahon was considering, the Mannequins. The deciding factor was McMahon's boredom with group names beginning with "the". The actual inspiration for starting the solo project came four years earlier in 200 when Andrew recorded Locked Doors with Something Corporate. The song was a sharp contrast to the band's previous material, so McMahon knew his only chance to get that sound recorded was on his own album.
After Something Corporate had finished selling concert tickets and playing all the show dates for their tour in 2004, McMahon recorded piano tracks and vocals for several other musicians' albums and eventually began recording material for his won album. Andrew's project led to a record deal with Maverick Records. The first album was released in 2005 and found a willing group of fans and critical praise. Jack's Mannequin was supposed to sell tickets for a tour over the summer, but acute lymphoblastic leukemia and a bone marrow transplant for McMahon cancelled the tour.
