The foundation of IPO was led by violinist Bronisław Huberman in 1936 with an original name " The Palestine Orchestra". The orchestra played its first concert in 1936 in Tel Aviv. The concert took place at the Levant Fair Hall under the direction of conductor Arturo Toscanini on the 26th of December. The enthusiastic and highly motivated ensemble started touring almost immediately with performances in Cairo and Alexandria. When the Israel's independence was declared in 1948, the ensemble was renamed the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
