The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is the preeminent symphony orchestra in Israel. It is considered as one of the best orchestras in the world. IPO is known as the leading orchestra in Asia. The foundation of IPO was led by violinist Bronis?aw Huberman in 1936 with an original name " The Palestine Orchestra". He formed this orchestra at a crucial time when almost 75 Jewish musicians were being fired from European orchestras. The founder of IPO, Bronis?aw Huberman was a multi-faceted Polish violinist born in Czestochowa. He was famous for his extremely individualistic and personal interpretations. He is known for playing on the famous Gibson Strad which was stolen from him on two separate occasions. Huberman was the teacher of Eric Rosenblith. Huberman brought together all these expelled out musicians at a platform called as the Palestine Orchestra. Conductor William Steinberg helped organize and set up the orchestra. The orchestra played its first concert in 1936 in Tel Aviv. The concert took place at the Levant Fair Hall under the direction of conductor Arturo Toscanini on the 26th of December. The enthusiastic and highly motivated ensemble started touring almost immediately with performances in Cairo and Alexandria. When the Israel's independence was declared in 1948, the ensemble was renamed the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
The IPO is always on frequent international tours, and is credited to host some of the world's greatest conductors. IPO had no enduring conductor for nearly the first 40 years of its existence. It was run by a succession of outstanding guest conductors. This exposure to a remarkable stand of leading masters lent the orchestra a certain flexibility and skillfulness, but at the cost of attaining cohesion and a reproducible sound. Leonard Bernstein and Zubin Mehta comes in the list of the reputed conductors associated with orchestra. The former kept up close ties with the orchestra from 1947, while the latter has worked as its Musical Advisor since 1968. Mehta was appointed Musical Director in 1977and Musical Director for Life in1981. As of 1992, IPO is frequently performs composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. The orchestra maintains a strict ban on Wagner's work, because of his anti-semitism and the association of his music with Nazi Germany.

Joseph Stevenson says about IPO, "The orchestra is a true "philharmonic" in the traditional sense, meaning that it is a cooperative owned by its musicians. The Philharmonic performs concert series in its home city of Tel-Aviv and in Haifa and Jerusalem, and makes frequent appearances elsewhere. Its main venue is the Mann Auditorium in Tel-Aviv, a hall with whose acoustics have often proven especially problematic for recording companies."
