Isaac Hayes
Background- Isaac Lee Hayes is not only a famous soul singer but is also an actor, songwriter, musician as well as an arranger. He won the Oscar Award for Best Original Song for the film Shaft. He also won the Academy Award in a non-acting category and in doing so he became the first Afro-American to win the award. He is also known for hi humanitarian works and for this he was crowned as an honorary king of Ghana's Ada district. In the year 2005, he was inducted in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame along with Bill Withers, Steve Cropper, Robert B. Sherman, Richard M. Sherman, John Fogerty and David Porter. Porter has been the longtime writing partner of Hayes.
Isaac Lee Hayes was raised by his poor grandparents. He grew up picking cotton in Covington, Tennessee. As Hayes says "We raised our own foods". He further adds, "we raised most of our crops, we had cattle, we had pork. Our corn was ground at the grist mill and we had molasses at the sorghum mill. A sack of flour would last several months. My grandmother did a lot of canning, preparing food and putting it up in the winter. My grandfather would go hunting and bring in a bunch of rabbits, so we were good. When we came to the city of Memphis, we didn't have anything to compare it to." He started singing at the age of five at his local church, and taught himself to play the saxophone, electronic organ and piano. He started recording as a session player, after he moved to Memphis, with the Stax Records. "During the time that I was there," Hayes recalls of the session, " Jim Stewart, the proprietor of Stax looked at me and said, 'Look, Booker T is off in Indiana U., from Booker T & the MG's, and I need a keyboard player so you want the job?' 'Yeaaa!' I jumped at it."

 He released his debut album "Presenting...," in 1968, which was a minor hit. A year later, he released "Hot Buttered Soul" which proved to be a major hit. In 1970 he released two more albums, "The Isaac Hayes Movement" and "To Be Continued". Both the albums were a huge hit. He then released a Christmas single "The Mistletoe and Me". He also contributed soundtrack for many films, which proved to be hit. He also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture for the "Theme from Shaft" and was also nominated for Best Original Dramatic Score for Shaft. After there was no stopping him.
