Hailing from Denver, Colorado and born India Arie Simpson, she is a two time winner of Grammy Award and professionally known as India.Arie or India.Arie. India.Arie is an eminent American soul music and R&B singer, songwriter, guitarist and a flautist. This multi-talented lady was born on October 3, 1975. She developed her musical skill at a young age, motivated by both, her mother, Joyce, a former singer, and now India Arie's stylist and her father, basketball star Ralph Simpson. She learned musical instruments throughout her schooling in Denver, Colorado but found herself interested in the guitar while attending the Savannah College of Art and Design. This interest inspired her to a personal insight about songwriting and performing. "When I started tapping into my own sensitivity, I started to understand people better. It was a direct result of writing songs," she said at the press release of her debut album, "Acoustic Soul".
She is credited to be the Co-founder of the Atlanta-based independent music collective GroovmentEarthseed. Her one-song turn on a locally released collection led her to perform a second-stage gig at the Lilith Fair. She was discovered by their Universal Records/Motown music scout and introduced Motown CEO Kedar Massenburg. Her debut album "Acoustic Soul" released in 2001, grabbed tremendous acclaim generating a huge fan base for her brave and eloquent new voice on hip-hop, the so called neo-soul, blues, folk, and classic troubadour-style songwriting. Acoustic Soul peaked at number ten on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart and number three on the R&B album chart. Within few months after its release, Acoustic Soul was certified double-platinum without the focussed radio play that typically drive pop and rap albums.

Artist Biography - India Arie
|
Arie is famous for her hip-hop music turning into melodious and catchy songs. Upon asking her attempt on other genres, she told Talia Soghomonian, "I do experiment with lots of different genres. In making music, I don't think of genre like, "I want to do this, because I'm going use that country music sound; I'm going use that hip-hop sound; I'm going use that acoustic [sound]." It's just making music. So now that I've traveled a lot more since I did Acoustic Soul, I'm sure that different sounds will come into place, because I have been exposed to it and I like it. But it's not so much of a conscience effort. It's mind and spirited. You know, we're humans."
India.Arie has also appeared on Stevie Wonder's album "A Time To Love", released on October 18, 2005. Arie is also credited for writing and singing "What About the Child", to raise funds and help child victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Her another project "Voyage to India" released in 2002, earned a 2003 Grammy for Best R&B Album. The single "Little Things" also received a 2003 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Shorty after release, "Voyage to India" was certified gold and certified platinum on Friday 4 August 2006. On June 27, 2006, Arie hit the shelves with third studio album, "Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship". This album gifted Arie her first number-one on the Billboard 200 and was her second chart-topper on the U.S. R&B album chart. This album became the first #1 album for the Motown record label in 33 years after Diana Ross's #1 "Lady Sings the Blues". Her latest work "Volume 2, Love and Politics" is expected to release in 2007.
