Ice Cube is one of the biggest and most controversial rap artists of all time. Born as O'Shea Jackson, Ice Cube started out his musical career as the first member of the California rap group NWA. He was also the first member to leave because of clashes with the management. After beginning his solo career, he quickly established himself as one of the top hip-hop artists of that time.
Surprisingly, despite being such a controversial figure, he had a very straight childhood. He was not into drugs or involved in gang wars and other anti-social elements that black youth have come to be be recognized for. His parents were both employed at UCLA and had a very normal life. He first came into contact with the b-boy culture until his late teens. His rap writing skills were evident from high school when he wrote, 'Boyz-n-the Hood.' He formed a rap duo with his partner Sir Jinx called CIA and began performing at parties hosted by Dr. Dre.
This is where he met Eazy E who was then head of a group called HBO. Later Cube, Eazy and Dre decided to combine forces and this the first incarnation of NWA was formed. In 1987, Cube soon left to study architectural drafting at Phoenix, Arizona. He returned the following year just in time for NWA's breakthrough album 'Straight Outta Compton.' The album was a huge underground hit when it was released in 1989.
NWA was now rivaling Public Enemy was the most notorious and controversial group in hip-hop. But during this time, Cube began to have differences with the management and this resulted in him quitting the band by the end of 1989. He went to New York with his new group, de Lench Mob and recorded his first album with the production team of ex-rivals Public Enemy. The album, 'AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted' was released in 1990 and became an instant hit, it went gold after just two weeks of its release.

Having made a name for himself as a solo artist, he began his own corporation and made a woman the head. He also produced an album for his female protegee, Yo-Yo. In late 1990, he released the EP, 'Kill at Will,' this was followed by the release of Yo-Yo's debut album, 'Make Way for the Motherlode.' He also made his acting debut in John Singleton's acclaimed drama, 'Boyz 'n the Hood.' His performance was praised all over.
His debut album may have sparked a controversy, but it was pale in comparison to his next ful length release, 'Death Certificate.' The album was released in 1991 and was more political and vulgar than its predecessor. His caused a huge outrage. The single 'No Vaseline' was a direct attack on NWA manager Jerry Heller. It was perceived anti-semitic and was widely criticized even by Billboard Magazine. But all the criticism could not prevent the album from reaching number 2 and going platinum. During 1992 he toured with the second Lollapolooza tour in a bid to please his white rock audience. He also converted to the Nation of Islam in 1992, this could be seen in his next album, 'Predator' which was released in 1992. The album became Cube's first to debut at number one on both the R&B and Pop charts.
But as time passed by, Cube interests began to diversify. He concentrated more on his role as producer, and also began consolidating his acting career. Because of this and other reasons, Cube's grip over the mass rap audience was beginning to loosen. He former ally, Dr. Dre was dominating the hip-hop scene and Cube was left trying desperately to catch him. He tried his best with the 1993 release of 'Lethal Injection' which would prove to be his last official album release for many years. The album debuted at number five and went platinum but was not as well received as the predecessors. In 1995, he appeared in Singleton's film, 'Higher Learning' and also made peace with Dr. Dre on their duet, 'Natural Born Killaz.'
