Hot Tuna began in 1970 as a side project of Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, who wanted to put aside psychedelia to explore their blues roots. Their format has frequently changed over the years (shifting back and forth from acoustic to electric), as has their personnel (the version of the band featuring fiddler Papa John Creach is beloved to fans), but their blues-rock sound remains consistent.

This group began as a spin-off of Jefferson Airplane. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady began playing as a duo, performing acoustic blues songs by the likes of Mississippi John Hurt and Reverend Gary Davis. The combination of Kaukenon's authentic Delta-style finger picking and Casady's rumbling electric bass immediately struck a chord with fans in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the group built up a loyal cult following. By the time the two left Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna had evolved into a hard-edged Blues Rock affair known for marathon, high volume shows.

Hot Tuna is an American band, formed by bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen as an acoustic (and occasionally electric blues) spin-off of Jefferson Airplane. Their early repertoire was derived mainly from the American country blues artists such as Rev. Gary Davis and Arthur Blake (Blind Blake). Casady and Kaukonen added Will Scarlett on harmonica and recorded 1970's Hot Tuna, which was followed by a long-series of well-received albums that played mostly to a small and devoted cult following. The band added a violin player named Papa John Creech and released albums, First Pull Up, Then Pull Down (1971) and Burgers (1972). They are often considered a forerunner of modern jam bands like Phish.

After going their separate ways in the late 1970's, Casady and Kaukonen re-formed Hot Tuna in the mid-1980's. Other musicians have come and gone over the group's various incarnations; the name Hot Tuna has essentially been shorthand for "Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen, and occasional collaborators." Most recently (2004-2005) they have toured with multi-instrumentalist Barry Mitterhoff and drummer Erik Diaz.

Hot Tuna — originally dubbed Hot Shit, much to the chagrin of their label, RCA — first began taking shape in 1969, while both Casady and Kaukonen were still active members of the Jefferson Airplane; in fact, their first performances were sandwiched between regular Airplane gigs. As a trio rounded out by harmonica player Will Scarlet (and occasionally including Airplane members Marty Balin and Spencer Dryden), Hot Tuna debuted in 1970 with a low-key self-titled LP of traditional blues and ragtime recorded live at the New Orleans House in Berkeley; by the following year's more rock-inspired First Pull Up, Then Pull Down, their roster included violinist Papa John Creach, concurrently a full-time member of the Airplane, and drummer Sammy Piazza. Minus Scarlet, a third album, Burgers, appeared in 1972.

By the appearance of 1974's The Phosphorous Rat, both Casady and Kaukonen had officially exited Jefferson Airplane; by this time Creach, who elected to remain with the Airplane, was no longer in the group. With 1975's America's Choice, Piazza too was gone, replaced by drummer Bob Steeler; Yellow Fever appeared that same year, with Hoppkorv following in 1976. Keyboardist Nick Buck signed on for 1978's Double Dose, but Hot Tuna subsequently announced their breakup, closing out the first phase of their career with 1979's Final Vinyl.
