Kentucky Derby History
|
 The Kentucky Derby began in 1875 after Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. returned from a trip to Europe that saw the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. Clark, Jr. quickly organized the Louisville Jockey Club to raise money to build a grand thoroughbred racing facility.
After the track was completed, the first race was run on May 17, 1875. The first Kentucky Derby was 1.5 miles long, the same as the Epsom Derby. The first victor was the horse Aristides and the jockey Oliver Lewis.
The race track officially became known as Churchill Downs soon after and the distance of the track was changed to one and a quarter miles in 1896. The Kentucky Derby was a spectator success right away, but did not become a financial success until Col. Matt Winn and a group of businessmen purchased the track in 1902. The race would quickly become the most important thoroughbred race in America.
