Background - Del Mar Thoroughbred Racing
The club has a long and illustrious history. When the club opened in the year 1937, Bing Crosby was present at the gate waiting to personally greet the fans. In the year 1938, a highly contested match race was held which drew large crowds and it was between the legendary rivals Seabiscuit and Ligaroti. By the year 1940, Del Mar has literally become the summer playground of many big Hollywood stars. The initial Bing Crosby Handicap was staged at Del Mar in the year 1946. This was the same year the reputed Sante Fe Railroad started offering a racetrack special which was instrumental in bringing spectators, numerous bettors and more horses to the club from Los Angeles. The remarkable track had the privilege of large purses for numerous stakes, many of which were incidentally won by the famous legendary jockey, Bill Shoemaker. During the 1960's and even in the 1970's the track regularly offered high quality racing and it was among the premier racetracks in the entire country.

2006 Season Preview
|
 During the 1980's the track still offered possibly the best summer racing and continued to grow in purses offered, handle, and attendance. During the 1990's the track got a major renovation. It included the demolishing of the grandstand and replacing it with a newer one.
As the club entered into the new century it still continues to post numerous records in handle and rise in attendance. It offers some of probably the greatest thoroughbred racing in entire America. The remarkable track has a prominent one mile main dirt track along with a seven furlong turf course. At the Del Mar Fairgrounds the tracks runs thorough the entire summer. In addition the track has stabling facilities for a thousand horses or more.
The famous track is also renowned for its splendid terra cotta grandstand. The facilities the club offers to its patrons is also of very appreciable quality. So if you are racing enthusiast then do get your tickets for the Del Mar racing events early and enjoy the superb races.
