The musical style and lyrics of Hard-Fi are mostly influenced by the suburban location of Staines, Spelthorne, Surrey in England. The band is usually an English Indie Rock Band. Although the town of Staines is seen by many critics, traditionally, as a cultural wasteland. But the town is closed to London, that can place a band in such a position to produce music that is mostly influenced by the scene.
The members of the Hard-Fi are Richard John Archer, Ross Phillips, Kai Stephens, Steven Michael Kemp and Wrongtom. Richard John Archer is the frontman of the band. He is also the lead singer and also the principal songwriter of the band. He has done his graduation from Kingston University, in music. Ross Phillips is the guitarist in the band and sometimes acts as the vocalist too. Phillips, before joining the band used to work in a local hi fi shop. It was in this shop that he met Archer who used to regularly come to the shop to play his demos on the latest systems. On one occasion, when Archer asked his views on the music Phillips replied that the music was all crap. Archer was so influenced with his straight answer that he recruited Phillips to play as the lead guitarist for the group. Kai Stephens is the bassist and also sings backing vocals. Steven Michael Kemp plays drum in the band. He originally hails from Lancashire. He used to play in Contempo, along with Richard. But when Richard formed Hard-Fi, he left the earlier band to join Hard-Fi. Wrongtom is the in-house remixer and the tour DJ.
