Hansel and Gretel is a German folk tale by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm: the Grimm Brothers. Later it was transformed into an opera by Engelbert Humperdinck, which was written (for the opera) by Adelheid Wette, Humperdinck's sister. The idea was first came to Humperdinck's sister to develop the story for opera by infusing some musical scores in it to be presented for the children during the Christmas. After much revisions, it ultimately turned into a full-scale opera.
The Grimm Brothers wrote the tale on the backdrop of the European community, during the middle age, specially those who were poor and lived in the forests. It is believed that the poor people on desperate and fearful times when they had to go through starvation used to leave their children in the forests, either to be eaten up by the wild animals or to grow up alone. The theme of the tale derives from the universal fear that a child goes through after being left out in the forest- abandonment, isolation, monsters and hunger. This dark tale was originally written for the adults, but has been softened and is regarded as child's fairy tale.
The first opera on Hansel and Gretel was performed in Weimar on December 23, 1983. The opera is performed at Christmas time. One of the most enchanting aspect about the opera is its folk music-inspired theme. The Opera is divided into Three Acts. Hansel and Gretel is the story of two kids who are left in the forest by their parents , as they are unable to feed the two children because of the poverty. Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer, who was best known for his opera, Hänsel und Gretel (1893). He was born at Sieburg, in the Rhine provinces. In 1872 he entered the Cologne Conservatory under Ferdinand Hiller. In 1876 he won a scholarship that enabled him to go to Muncih where he carried on his study with Franz Paul Lachner and later with Jsef Rheinberger. Then he won the Mendelssohn Stiftung of Berlin in the year 1879 and then went to Italy and became friends with Richard Wagner in Naples. He spent two years in Barcelona teaching at the Conservatoire. Later he was appointed as the professor at the Hoch Conservatory in 1890. By this time he had composed a number of works for chorus as well as for a orchestra, Humoreske. It enjoyed a vogue in Germany. He was greatly influenced by Richard Wagner and as a result assisted Wagner in his work. He was the first to use Sprechgesang, a technique of using vocal between singing and speaking. But he is famous for his opera Hänsel und Gretel. Although he died in 1941, but the opera is still going on.
The opera was also telecasted live on the PBS from the Met series and was translated in English instead of traditional German.
