Gym Class Heroes are known for their diverse appeal that is based on their unique musical combination of rap, rock,R&B and funk. They cannot be classified specifically as a particular genre, since they often conduct tour with indie rock and pop-punk bands and is rooted in traditional hip-hop too. They also feature in live instruments instead of looped samples or beats. Their lyrics consists of socially conscious elements, humor and a kind of wry perceptiveness.
It was in the year 1997 when MC/ vocalist Travis Schleprok McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley became fast friends while they were at high-school gym class. They found that they shared the same interest-music. They wanted to create a new palette for hip-hop and so started working with other musicians to learn more about hip-hop. In the year 2001, they thought of forming their own band which they named Gym Class Heroes. They then brought in Dishashi Lumumba-Kasongo and bassist Eric Roberts. With all the members well-placed in their band, they released their first album For The Kids in the same year. The album went well and the lead singer Travis McCoy won MTV's Direct Effect MC Battle. Later he also featured in Styles P's video "Daddy Get That Cash".
They started touring nonstop. Then they recorded their next album The Papercut Chronicles in the year 2003. Even before they could mix and master the album, the album caught the attention of Pete Wentz. The band were officially signed to the Fueled by Ramen imprint, Decaydence on September 2004. The album The Papercut EP , preceded the eventual February 2005 release of their before album The Papercut Chronicles. The album was instant hit performing in Midtown, Fall Out Boy and Academy Is..., along with hitting the year's SXSW, Bamboozle, and many Warped Tour festivals. This was not end of the list, they also spent half of the summer, for the opening ska-punks Streetlight Manifesto. The cover song of A Red Hot Chili Peppers was donated to Fearless' Punk Goes '90s .As Cruel as School Children was produced by S*A*M and Sluggo aka session bassist Dave Katz and was co-produced by Fall Out Boy Vocalist Patrick Stump. The album has got many guest appearences. They are William Beckett and Arrested Development's Speech. That particular summer they spent supporting the record on the Warped Tour.
