Having regained their popularity and commercial viability, Green Day chose to take on several smaller projects before making a return to the recording studio; they contributed a cover of John Lennon's Working Class Hero to the charity album Instant Karma, made a cameo appearance in The Simpsons Movie, and recorded an entire album of '60s-style rock-and-roll under the alias Foxboro Hot Tubs. While presenting an award at the 2009 Grammy Awards early in the year, Green Day announced their upcoming release of their eighth album, 21st Century Breakdown, another ambitious punk rock opera which had been recorded with veteran producer Butch Vig. In May of 2009, 21st Century Breakdown was released, and seemed to pick up right where American Idiot left off – a commercial success, selling over 215,000 copies in its first three days of sales. This band has obviously sold a ton of records, but even if you do not own one of their many recordings, you have most likely seen them keeping it real on Saturday Night Live or MTV's Total Request Live. Either way, live and in person is a completely different experience, so check for local tour dates and get your Green Day concert tickets right away.
