Great Big Sea (GBS) is a folk-rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada . The band performs rock interpretation of traditional Newfoundland folk songs. The band also performs original songs.
Musical journey of Great Big Sea started in 1993, when the band performed their first official gig from their self debut album titled as Great Big Sea during the opening ceremony of Irish Descendants at Memorial University in St. John's , Newfoundland.
The founding members of the band included Alan Doyle, Sean McCann, Bob Hallett and Darrell Power. In 2002, Darrell Power retired from Great Big Sea. Same year Kris MacFarlane joined the band and in 2003, Murray Foster was part of the band.
This talented band has won the Entertainer of the Year award at the East Coast Music Awards from 1996 to 2001. They were even nominated for several Juno awards.
