Graham Parker started his musical career singing for small-time English bands like Deep Cut Tree and Black Rockers. He even worked in glove factory as well as petrol station. In the summer of 1975, Graham Parker and the Rumour was formed. The group members were Bob Andrews on keyboards, Brinsley Schwarz and Martin Belmont on guitar, Steve Goulding on drums and Andrew Bodnar on bass. They began to regularly perform in the British pub rock scene. In 1976, their first album "Howlin' Wind" was releases. The album got rave reviews for its overall musical excellence. This was followed by the stylistic "Heat Treatment". Both the albums were a mixture of rock, reggae and ballads. These albums clearly depicted Parker's early influences from The Rolling Stones, Motown and Bob Dylan. "White Honey", "Soul Shoes", "Fool's Gold" "Lady Doctor", and "Don't Ask Me Questions" were some of the glorious tracks from these albums.
In 1976 Graham Parker and the Rumour appeared on Top of the Pops aired by BBC television. At this time Graham parker brought a change in his songwriting style in order to suit the American listeners. "Stick to Me" which was released in 1977 did good business both in UK and America. In UK the album broke the Top 20 list. The album included "The Heat in Harlem", the band's longest song. In 1978, the band released another album entitled "The Parkerilla". In 1979, "Mercury Poisoning" was released. Parker got a contract with the renowned Arista Records and released the album "Squeezing Out Sparks". Many fans still believe "squeezing Out Sparks" as Parker's greatest work till date.
1980's "The Up Escalator" became Parker's highest-charting album Britain. This album included guest vocals from from Bruce Springsteen. With the Rumour, it was Parker's last album. However, guitarist Brinsley Schwarz used to work with Parker till the end of the decade. In 1985, Parker's "Steady Nerves" hit the market and received great response.
