The meeting of four friends from Southport was the genesis of Gomez. The four members are guitarist and vocalist Ian Ball, drummer Olly Peacock, bassist Paul Blackburn and guitarist / vocalist / keyboardist Tom Gray. Guitarist and vocalist Ian Ball and drummer Olly Peacock previously played together for Severed, a local heavy metal band. The band later recruited guitarist/vocalist Ben Ottewell from Matlock Bath.

In the later part of 1996 the band played their first gig in Leeds without a formal name. The band retained a sign out for one of their friends whose surname was Gomez. The band did that in order to indicate that it was the site of their first gig. People watched the sign and thought that the band's name was Gomez – the name stayed with the band.

The band started recording a four-track demos in Southport soon after. A bidding war erupted when Gomez sent the demos to the recording labels. Gomez finally signed with Hut, Virgin Records' subsidiary, in 1997.

In 1997 Gomez entered the recording studio to turn their demos into a full-length album. The band spent its next three months in the studio and toured the United Kingdom with Embrace. Their first single entitle "78 Stone Wobble" got released in March 1998. "Bring It On", the band's debut album hit the market a month later. The album got very good response all over. From both sides of the Atlantic rave reviews started coming for a very long period of time. Spin Magazine called the album a "damn beautiful album". In 1998, "Bring It On" went on winning the Mercury Music Prize for best album. "Bring It On" beat hot favorites Verve's "Urban Hymns" and Massive Attack's "Mezzanine". After Gomez's U.S. tour with Eagle Eye Cherry, the band released "Whippin' Piccadilly" and "Get Myself Arrested" as singles.

"Liquid Skin", the band's second album was released in 1999 . This album became popular not only in UK but also in Australia. It even made into the Billboard Heatseeker chart. In 2000 "Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline" was released. "In Our Gun"hit the market in 2002. It was listed in the UK Top Ten list as well as Australian Top 50 list. The single "Shot Shop" became a hard hitting hit.
