Having been played since 1926, the Northern Trust Open is the fourth-oldest event on the PGA Tour and is currently played at the historic and revered Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. Riviera is one of the true classic courses of the PGA Tour, having first hosted the open in 1929, and every year but one since 1973. With 2010 Northern Trust Open tickets, fans first played witness to Steve Stricker winning at this historic venue, held February 4-7, then watched as he was presented a $1,152,000 check for doing so!
Prior to 2008, the Northern Trust Open was first called simply the Los Angeles Open (1926-1970), then hosted by country singer Glen Campbell and also carrying his name from 1971 to 1983, before going back to just the Los Angeles Open (1984-86), adding Nissan as a sponsor and carrying the Japanese auto manufacturer's name in some form of the title for 21 years (1987-2007), before changing to the current sponsor and name for the past three years.
Other Los Angeles area courses which have played host to the Northern Trust Open include the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club, El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Wilshire Country Club, Hillcrest Country Club, the Wilson and Harding Courses at Griffith Park, Inglewood Country Club in Inglewood, and Rancho Municipal Golf Course.
Having been played since 1926, the Northern Trust Open has quite a few interesting facts, such as not seeing its first left-handed winner, Mike Weir, until 2003, and the interesting fact that Tiger Woods has played the Northern Trust eleven times without winning – the most Tiger has played any event without a victory.
