Background - Wachovia Golf Championship
At the 1979 Kemper Open, the year before the tournament moved to the Washington, D.C. area, there were three players in the field at Quail Hollow Club who are back in Charlotte playing this week. Peter Jacobsen, Curtis Strange and Jay Haas all played at Quail Hollow 24 years ago, with Jacobsen tying for 47th and Strange and Haas missing the cut. Jacobsen shot rounds of 74-69-70-73 and won $899. Strange's 74-71 and Haas' 80-76 weren't good enough to get them to the weekend.
That week, Jacobsen was playing his 65th Tour event; Strange was making his 68th Tour start and Haas his 82nd. In their careers, Jacobsen has played in 618 Tour events, with six wins. Strange has 587 starts and 17 wins, while Haas has played in 739 tournaments, winning nine times.
The Quail Hollow Club, named for the abundance of quail in the area, was founded April 13, 1959. The golf course was originally designed by George Cobb and opened June 3, 1961.
Arnold Palmer, who used to have a home on the 15th hole, made modifications on several holes in 1986. Tom Fazio redesigned the course in 1997 and made other modifications last year to add length to the course.

2006 Season Preview
|
 The 2006 Wachovia Championship is scheduled to take place between May 1-7, 2006 at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. From the 2007 season, the championship will lead into the THE PLAYERS Championship and shall further strengthen the position of this event on the PGA TOUR schedule. Many of the world's top golfers like Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia will compete in the Wachovia Championship this year.
Just like the previous year, The Wachovia Championship will donate the majority of the proceeds to its primary beneficiary - Teach For America. Teach for America consists of a national corps of recent college graduates of all academic majors who dedicate two years of their life to teach in urban and rural public schools. It's primary aim to eradicate educational inequities in the country. Last year the event donated $1 million to the Teach For America. This is the third straight year that the Championships have donated such a huge amount to this great cause.

Garcia had a 6 shot lead as he entered the final day, but in a nail-biting playoff, Vijay Singh snatched the win from Garcia and ended up having the last laugh. Singh played an inspiring final round where he notched up the score of 66 and won the 2005 Wachovia Championship on the fourth playoff hole.
