The origin of the game of golf has never been clearly established. The Romans during the reign of Caesar played a game resembling golf by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped branches. Scotland is the home of the world's oldest golf course, St. Andrews, which was used as early as the 16th century.

New Zealand's Michael Campbell fended off a strong fight by Tiger Woods in final round to grab his first major and also become the first Kiwi to win a major since Bob Charles won the British Open in 1963. On his amazing route to victory, Campbell first ousted Retief Goosen and took the lead , he then held off the resilient world No. 1 Tiger Woods to capture his first major championship. Campbell scored a final round 69 at Pinehurst No. 2 to finish at even par and beat Woods by two strokes. He is the 57th player in history to make the U.S. Open his first major, he is also the first player in last seven years to come back from behind and win the major.
Campbell had begun the day at 1 over, four strokes behind the defending and two-time champion, Retief Goosen. The South African golfer was three strokes ahead of his nearest competitors, most of the opposition had already conceded the title to him. But Campbell came out victorious and the manner of his victory is definitely praiseworthy.
