The U.S. Bank Championship is played on a public golf course in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and usually scheduled opposite the British Open on the PGA Tour calendar. The tournament was known throughout most of its history as the Greater Milwaukee Open, until title sponsor U.S. Bancorp came aboard in 2004 and added its name to the title.

Since 1994, the home of the U.S. Bank Championship is Brown Deer Park Golf Course in Milwaukee. A public course, owned by Milwaukee County, Brown Deer Park opened in 1929. The course was originally design by George Hansen, and much later Andy North and Roger Packard teamed up on a partial redesign. Prior to Brown Deer, the U.S. Bank Championship has been played at a few other Milwaukee-area courses; NorthShore Country Club in Mequon (1968-70), Tripoli Golf Club in Milwaukee (1971-72), and Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin (1973-1993).

Another tournament debuted in Milwaukee in 1940, with Ralph Guldahl winning what was called the Milwaukee Open. It wasn't played again until 1951, then skipped another four years, and was played from 1955-1961, with winners including Ken Venturi, Cary Middlecoff and Gene Littler. The Milwaukee Open is considered completely separate from what we now call the U.S. Bank Championship, even though some history of the U.S. Bank references the earlier Milwaukee Open.

Although this tournament's official PGA Tour history dates back quite a few decades, when it debuted as the Greater Milwaukee Open, possibly the most notable debut was when Tiger Woods played his very first PGA Tour event as a professional at the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open. In his first and only U.S. Bank appearance, Woods finished tied for 60th, earning a modest $2,544.
