Travelers Championship Tickets The Travelers Championship is regularly the second most attended PGA Tour event, behind only behind the FBR Open. The Travelers Championship has been played on only two Connecticut courses since its PGA Tour debut in 1952; Wethersfield Country Club from 1952 to 1983, and TPC River Highlands from 1984 to the present. For its first three decades, the Travelers Championship was played at Wethersfield Country Club, and in 1984, after the PGA Tour bought and redesigned Edgewood Country Club, the event moved to the new TPC of Connecticut in Cromwell. In 1991, the course was substantially redesigned and renamed, with a completely new back nine holes and now called TPC at River Highlands. This TPC property was the third PGA Tour owned and managed championship golf course in what has eventually grown to a network of over 25 TPC Clubs. In the last ten years, longer hitters have done well at the Travelers, with Stewart Cink, Hunter Mahan, J.J. Henry, and Phil Mickelson combining for five victories over an eight year span, and Mahan having also tied for second in both 2006 and 2008. Founded as the Insurance City Open in 1952, the tournament was renamed the Greater Hartford Open in 1967, a title that was retained in part through 2003. Legendary entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. was associated with the event for 16 years, first having his name in the title in 1973 when it was called the Sammy Davis Jr. Greater Hartford Open, and until changing sponsors and the name to the Canon Sammy Davis Jr. Greater Hartford Open in 1988, Davis' last year of involvement. Canon was a long-time sponsor of this tournament, with their employees often taking vacation time during tournament week in order to volunteer at the event.

 Renamed the Travelers Championship in 2007, the tournament carries quite a bit of history with it; such as Arnold Palmer's victory in 1956 win, just his second PGA Tour win. Billy Casper is the only golfer to win this tournament more than twice, posting wins in 1963, 1965, 1968, and 1973. Arnold Palmer, Peter Jacobsen, Paul Azinger and Phil Mickelson are the others to win the Travelers multiple times, each with two wins, and with Mickelson being the only golfer to post back-to-back wins here 2001 and 2002. Jacobsen's first win was in 1984, but his second didn't come until 2003 when he was nearly 50 years old; a 19-year gap between two wins in the same tournament, with no wins in that tournament in-between, which places him second in that category behind Hale Irwin with a record of 21 years in between. There have been 19 playoffs in Travelers Championship history, which means the tournament has ended with a playoff more than one-third of the times it has been played, and when Hunter Mahan won in 2007, he became the 13th player to post his first career PGA Tour victory in this event.
