The Masters Tickets The Masters Tournament is one of the four major championships in professional golf, and is also known as The Masters, or The U.S. Masters outside of the United States. Normally scheduled to take place the first full week of April, it is the first of the four majors to be played each season, and unlike the other major championships, The Masters is held at the same venue every year – Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf club in the city of Augusta, Georgia. 2010 Masters Tournament tickets will carry a bit of history, as this event will mark the return of Tiger Woods to the Tour following his controversial four-month layoff. The Masters was started by Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones, who designed Augusta National with course architect Alister MacKenzie, and is counted as an official money event on the PGA Tour, the PGA European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour. Being an invitational event, The Masters field of competitors is smaller than those of the other major championships, with entry being under the complete control of the Augusta National Golf Club. As one might imagine The Masters Tournament carries with it a number of traditions. A green jacket is awarded to the winner of each tournament, but must be returned to the clubhouse after one year. The Champions dinner, inaugurated by Ben Hogan, is always held on the Tuesday before each tournament and can only be attended by past champions and specific board members of the Augusta National Golf Club. Beginning in 1963, legendary golfers – usually past Masters Tournament champions – have hit an honorary tee shot to launch the first round. A few such legends to have participated in this tradition include Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, and Arnold Palmer, who has hit the tee shot the last two years. Since 1960, a social Par 3 Contest has been played on the Augusta grounds the day before the first round of each Masters Tournament.

 Jack Nicklaus has won more Masters Tournaments than any other golfer, winning six times between 1963 and 1986. Other multiple winners include Arnold Palmer (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964) and Tiger Woods (1997, 2001-02, 2005), with four each. Gary Player, a native of South Africa, was the first non-American player to win the tournament in 1961. The Masters Tournament organizers also regularly extend the length and alter the layout of the course to meet current developments in equipment technology and player skill. Because The Masters has a relatively small field compared to other golf tournaments, the competitors only play in threesomes for the first 36 holes on the first two days. After 36 holes have been played by all, players are eliminated to reduce the field, and to make the cut players must be either within 44 places of the lead (including ties) or within 10 strokes of the leader's score. These rules have applied since the 1961 tournament; 1957-60 the best 40 scores and ties and those within 10 strokes of the leader made the cut, while prior to 1957 there was no 36-hole cut at all. Winning The Masters, as with the other majors, gives a golfer multiple privileges which further secure the future of their career. Masters Tournament champions are automatically invited to play in the other three majors (the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, and the PGA Championship) for the next five years, in addition to earning a lifetime invitation to The Masters. Masters victors also receive membership on the PGA Tour for the following five seasons and invitations to The PLAYERS Championship for five years. Because The Masters was established by Bobby Jones, an amateur golfer, the tournament has a tradition of honoring amateur golf, inviting winners of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the world, in addition to having the current U.S. Amateur champion always play in the same group as the defending Masters champion for the first two rounds of the tournament. There is only one place for true golf fans to be on the second Sunday of every April, and that should be The Masters Tournament in Augusta for the weekend of April 8-11, 2010.
