Background - Presidents Cup
The biennial event played in non-Ryder Cup years, The Presidents Cup was first played Sept. 16-18, 1994 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club on Lake Manassas in Prince William County, Virginia, USA. The United States Team, captained by Hale Irwin, defeated the David Graham-captained International Team, 20-12.
In 1996, the United States also won The Presidents Cup at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Sept. 13-15. Arnold Palmer, no stranger to high-level international competition, had the reins as the United States edged Peter Thomson's International squad, 16 1/2 - 15 1/2.
In 1998, The Presidents Cup was held Dec. 11-13 "down under" at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. The International Team won 20 1/2 - 11 1/2. Thomson returned to captain the victorious International squad while Jack Nicklaus served as Captain of the United States Team.
The eligibility standings are used to select 10 members for each squad. Two "Captain's Choices" round out the 12-man teams.

2006 Season Preview
|
 The Presidents Cup competition comprises of ten matches which means five foursomes matches in the morning and five four-ball matches in the afternoon. Each member of the twelve man squads plays each day and all matches are worth one point that means 32 points are available through the tournament. The players don't get any individual prize money as the net revenues are equally divided and shared between the players and captains designated for charities.
The Presidents Cup was originated to give the best non-European golf players to the world. This year, the competition has eight of the top-ten players in the world to compete. The tournament is played in non-Ryder Cup years and comprises of thirty four matches. The tournament will be played at Royal Montreal. It has been consistently held at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in northern Virginia (US) each year.
The former presidents of the tournament have served as honorary chairman. It's been played in the Golf Club alongside the Lake Manassas, Virginia. US host the sixth staging of this grand biennial event. The main thought behind this competition is to develop and give best non-European players to the world. With the beginning of the tournament Gary Player (South African), will make his second consecutive appearance as the captain of the International Team. While the, American contingent will be consecutively skippered for the third time by Jack Nicklaus. When Hale Irwin was the captain of the very first U.S. team, then the team won, 20-12, followed by Arnold Palmer who captained the winning team which defeated the International team. In 2000 United States rebounded with Ken Venture and went one to win the Cup. The South African team performed very well in 2003, when they finished in 17-17 tie, as Robert Allen by and Davis Love III halved the final match, when big guns, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods halved three holes with pars, as the matches were called off because of darkness and then deemed a tie.
The Presidents Cup is unique in itself as all the money goes for the charity purpose. The charities are devoted to child welfare, medical care and research for elderly and environment, as well as schools, churches, hospitals, shelters for the homeless and abused, and junior golf organization.
