The Players Championship Tickets Referred to by many as "The Fifth Major", the Players Championship has been contested annually since 1974, and the importance of the event cannot be emphasized enough. Although it does not quite make it to Major status, as it is not considered an official event of the European Tour, the Players Championship is still in a category of its own.
Besides its $9 million purse making the Players Championship the wealthiest tournament of the PGA Tour, the winners are rewarded with added benefits such as a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour, an open invitation to the US Masters Golf Tournament for three consecutive years, a three-year exemption for the British Open golf tournament, and exemptions to both the US Open Golf Championship and the PGA Championships for the year.
In addition to these lucrative bonuses is the fact that the Players Championship offers the winner an excessively high amount of points which count toward the year-end Official World Golf Ranking. The winner receives a fixed allocation of 80 points towards his Official World Golf Ranking, which is the most allocated to any event apart from the majors, in which winners earn 100 points.

 For comparison, the winners of the three individual World Golf Championships – the Accenture Match Play Championship, WGC-Championship, and WGC Bridgestone Invitational – generally receive between 70 and 78 points, and these three tournaments are official money events of the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour.
The Players Championship history has seen the tournament contested at several venues over the years, with the inaugural event in 1974 contested at the Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia, before moving to the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975, the Inverrary Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1976, and to its current location in Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida in 1977; first at the Sawgrass Country Club abutting the Atlantic Ocean before switching to its permanent home on The Stadium Course at TPC at Sawgrass in 1982.
Historically the tournament has always been held in March, but due to the restructuring of the PGA Tour to accommodate the exciting new FedEx Cup competition, the Players Championship has been moved to the month of May each year, with the next tournament that you need to get tickets for scheduled for play next May 6-9, 2010.
