Background - Pga Championship
Dedicated to the promotion of the game of golf everywhere, the American Professional Golfers Association can trace it's origins to January 17, 1916. This is when a group of New York area golf professionals and several well known amateur golfers attended a luncheon hosted by department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker at the Taplow Club in New York City. The purpose of the meeting was a discussion concerning the topic of forming a national organization that would promote interest in the game of golf and help elevate the vocation of golf professional.

2006 Season Preview

 The 2006 PGA Championship will be played between August 14-20, 2006 at the Medinah Country Club. The Club hosted the PGA Championship in 1999. The event is called the Grand Slam of Golf and is one of the majors on the PGA tour. The top golfers of the world converge to compete for this coveted title.
The 2005 PGA Championships were played out at the famed Lower Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. Vijay Singh was the defending champion and he was looking to protect the gold against a star studded field. Tiger Woods was considered the favorite to pick up his third major of the year. After winning the Masters and British Open, Woods was in winning form and looked the most likely to pick up the title. But he fumbled in the beginning, he did bounce back but he could not stop the eventual Champion.
Phil Mickelson ultimately won the 87th PGA Championships by a single stroke after a three way playoff between him, Elkington and Bjorn. Mickelson won the second Major of his career in dramatic style. He flopped a chip out of deep rough to within 2 feet, landed a birdie and confirmed his one-shot victory in the PGA Championship. Upon winning the PGA Championship, he joined an elite list that includes Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo and Curtis Strange, as the only players in the past 20 years to win majors in consecutive years.
Mickelson ended the day at 4-under 276 and earned $1.17 million for his fourth win of the season. He matched Woods and Vijay Singh for the most victories on the PGA Tour this year. He also attained the No. 3 ranking in the world toppling Ernie Els from the spot. Woods finished the event at 3-under 277 , meant Woods was free to leave. He ended the tournament tied for fourth with Davis Love III. Mickelson's closest rivals missed out in the final hole. Elkington shot 71 and Bjorn had a 72 and their missed chances will haunt them for some time. Be a part of the 2006 PGA Championship and watch the world's best golfers fight it out to win the title.
