The PGA Tour continues its West Coast Swing with the Nissan Open this week at famed Riviera Country Club, as the tour's best battle it out at "Hogan's Alley." The legendary Ben Hogan dominated this event in the 1940s, winning three times and finishing second once.
The purse was increased by $300,000 from last year and has been increased eight straight years. It totals $4.8 million with the winner receiving $864,000, the runner-up getting $518,400 and the third-place finisher earning $326,400.

2006 Season Preview

 2006 marks the eighteenth year Nissan has consistently sponsored this internationally renowned PGA Tour event. Past tournament champions include great names such as Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Fred Couples, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Ernie Els and others.
The event will be held in Los Angeles at the reputed Riviera Country Club situated in Pacific Palisades from 16 Feb to 19th.
The tournament is conceived by the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Los Angeles). They have been managing the tournament since its inception in 1926. This event has already generated and contributed more than $50 million in charitable funding.
The championship offers a unique view of the Par 5, 576 yard, with 17th holes where the incredible birdie action is expected. The other sponsors of the event are AVNET, Brocade, Microsoft, IBM, and The Carolina Development Company.
Last year Queenslander Adam Scott clinched the dramatic victory in the rain-affected Nissan Open after a sudden-death playoff with Chad Campbell from US. The rain caused a huge disturbance and then the tournament was reduced to two rounds, initially Scott won the first play of hole and went on to win the tournament in sudden death. With this win Scott earned US$864,000 and his ranking improved as he moved to world number 7. After this win Scott told Reuters, "A win's a win and it's nice to be playing well here."
Riviera is the only PGA TOUR course where Woods has played at least 4 times as a pro without winning. In 1999 Woods came close to win the tournament but couldn't earn the title and lastly he finished just two shots behind Ernie Els. Ben Hogan in the only player who won three straight at Riviera and other back-to-back winners at the same championship were Paul Harney, MacDonald Smith, Palmer and Corey Pavin.
