Background - Nec Invitational
The second of the four World Golf Championship events offers a $7 million purse and a $1.26 million winner's check.
Despite its place on the schedule immediately following the PGA Championship, the 2004 WGC-NEC Invitational boasts a remarkable field that includes 48 of the top 50 players in the world. Only Retief Goosen and Thomas Bjorn among the top 50 are missing this event, which tees off Thursday.
The purse for this World Golf Championship event was increased by $1 million from last year to $7 million, with the winner receiving an astonishing first-place check of $1.26 million. The runner-up will pocket $756,000, while the third-place finisher will get $476,000.

2005 Season Preview

 The event again will be held on the South Course at Firestone Country Club. Course architect Bert Way created the 7,283-yard, par-70 layout in 1929, and Robert Trent Jones refurbished it in 1960.
The NEC Invitational features a 72-hole, stroke-play format with no cut. The elite field includes the members of the last Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams as well as the other players in the top 50 in the world rankings, the winners of select worldwide events over the past years and the top players from the Australasian Tour, Southern Africa Tour, Asian PGA and Japan Golf Tour.
This is the second of four World Golf Championship events scheduled for 2004. Earlier this season, Tiger Woods captured the Accenture Match Play Championship, defeating Davis Love III in the finals. With that win, Woods has won at least one WGC event in each of the last six years.
