Missions Hill World Cup Tickets The Omega Mission Hills World Cup is an annual tournament founded by Canadian industrialist John Jay Hopkins, with the intention of promoting international goodwill through golf. The World Cup is contested by teams of two representing their country, with only one team allowed from each country. The players are invited to play in the World Cup based on the Official World Golf Rankings, although some of the first choice players do not always accept the invitation. From the next scheduled World Cup, November 26-29, 2009, and through 2018, the tournament will be held at the Mission Hills Golf Club in China and sponsored by Omega, thus carrying the full name of the Omega Mission Hills World Cup. Beginning as the Canada Cup in 1953, the name was changed to the World Cup in 1967. With the International Golf Association and Tournament Director Fred Corcoran behind it from 1955 to 1977, the World Cup traversed the globe; growing into one of golf's most prestigious events throughout the 1960s and '70s, and eventually becoming known as the World Cup of Golf in 1993. The World Cup was included as one of the World Golf Championships events from 2000 to 2006, and continued to be sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours even after it ceased to be part of the WGC, beginning in 2007. The United States holds the record for the most number of World Cup wins with 23, followed by South Africa with five, Australia and Spain with four, Canada with three, and England, Germany, Ireland, Japan, and Wales, with two. Three other countries have tasted victory at least once, and they are Argentina, Sweden, and Taiwan.
