 The Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya was first played in February of 2007 and it is the first PGA Tour event to be played in Mexico this decade. The Mayakoba is an alternate event played the same week as the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. As an alternate tournament, it counts for the FedEx Cup but only counts for half points like other alternate events.
In 2008 the Mayakoba Championship prize fund was $3.5 million – first prize being $630,000 – making it the richest golf tournament in Mexico. Fred Funk won the inaugural event in 2007, and at the age of 50 years, 8 months, and 12 days, it made him the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event in 32 years. Rounding out the short winners list are Brian Gay in 2008 and Mark Wilson in 2009.
