Background - Masters Golf
The tournament and the course were devised by golf administrator Clifford Roberts, golf-legend Bobby Jones, and course architect Alister MacKenzie. Jones wanted to build a new golf course after he retired. With help and advice from Roberts and a design by MacKenzie, construction began in 1931 and completed in 1933. Unfortunately fans with tickets to the inaugural event did not get to see Jones, who passed away before his vision was complete. Instead Ben Hogan, another golf superstar of the time, delivered the inaugural speech.
The Masters Tournament was played on March 22, 1934. Then the tournament play was known as the Augusta National Invitation. The event was won by Horton Smith. Five years later the tournament was officially christened the Masters Tournament. Over the years, golfers and fans lucky enough to get tickets to the event have celebrated three traditions. The first is the awarding of the green jacket to the winner of the tournament, the second is the Champion dinner held on the Tuesday before the tournament, and the third has legendary golfers, often times past tournament winners, hitting the tee shot on the morning of the first round.
The PGA is not the only organization to utilize the Augusta grounds as a money event. The PGA European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour also use the legendary course.
