Background - British Open
The Open Championship, typically referred to in North America as the British Open, is the annual men's championship golf tournament first played on 17 October 1860 at Royal Prestwick. Each year the event is hosted by one of several prestigious golf clubs in Britain including the Old Course at St Andrews, Muirfield Golf Links in Scotland, and Royal Birkdale; however, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) administers The Open regardless of its site.
The Open has been the third tournament of the PGA TOUR's Grand Slam of golf for decades, although the PGA TOUR did not recognize it as one of its official events until 1995. The PGA European Tour has always recognized The Open as an official event. The Champion's Belt & The Claret Jug.Originally, the trophy presented to the event's winner was the Champion's Belt, a red leather belt with a silver buckle. It was retired in 1870, when Tom Morris, Jr was allowed to keep it for winning the tournament three consecutive times. It was then replaced by the present trophy, the Claret Jug.

2006 Season Preview
|
The 2006 British Open 2006 will be held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. The Open is considered as the greatest golf tournament in the world. The most acclaimed names in Golf from around the world will gather at the Hoylake Course. The course is among the toughest and most demanding of the top seaside courses in the UK. The Open was last played at Hoylake way back in 1967. The British Open comes back to this renowned course that has hosted the tournament no less than 10 times since its inception.
Last year's British Open was won Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods played a strong final round and waled away with the 134th British Open title. It was Tiger's second major this year and his 10th overall. The victory brought him closer to the 18 majors won by the great Jack Nicklaus. Woods won his first career Grand Slam at the Old Course in 2000. He shot a round of 19 under and won by eight strokes.
Tiger Woods led throughout the Open and is only the sixth player to do so at an Open and the first since Tom Weiskopf at Troon in 1973. When play on the final day began, there were seven players who were within five strokes of Woods, these included U.S. Open champion, Michael Campbell, World No. 2 Vijay Singh, No. 5 Retief Goosen and No. 6 Sergio Garcia. Jose-Maria Olazabal was the closest to troubling Woods and just two shots back. Scotland's Colin Montgomery was three strokes behind and would be tiger's main opponent..
Woods finished the event on 14- under-par 274 with rounds of 66, 67, 71 and 70. Jose Maria Olazabal, bogeyed on 12, 13, 15 and 17 but birdied the 18th to finish with a score of 74 and tied for third place with American Fred Couples. Montgomery on the other hand bogeyed on the 11th, 13th and 16th holes. The Scot returned to score a round of 72 and secured second place at nine-under and his fourth runner-up placing at a major.
