Background - Bob Hope Classic
Bob Hope Classic tournament history was made in 1995 when the team of Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Bob Hope and defending champion Scott Hoch teed up for that year's opening round. This landmark event marked the first time a sitting president, Clinton, had played during a PGA event, and possibly the first time up to that point where three presidents had ever played together.

 The Bob Hope Classic, played each January in California's Coachella Valley, is probably best known for its celebrity pro-am format, as well as having five 18-hole rounds of competition instead of the PGA Tour standard of four rounds. Currently, the Bob Hope Classic is the third event on the PGA's schedule and is part of the Tour's FedEx Cup competition, but it's definitely the pro-am feature which makes this an immensely popular, must have ticket each year.
The Bob Hope Classic was originally founded in 1960 as the Palm Springs Golf Classic in 1960, having evolved from the Thunderbird Invitational that was held in Palm Springs from 1954 to 1959. Being played in five rounds and on four different courses, its format remains one of a kind among PGA Tour events, and has seen "the Hope" played on numerous combinations of local courses over its many years as part of the tour.
The tradition of choosing the tournament's Classic Girls from among area colleges began in the early years, with the earliest Bob Hope Classics also having a celebrity dubbed Classic Queen. The earliest queens of the classic included Debbie Reynolds, Jane Powell and Jill St. John, as well as Barbara Eden and Lynda Carter in the later years.
While attracting some of the era's most popular celebrities, the Bob Hope Classic's biggest draw has always been the celebrity pro-am competition. Getting it all started were many of the most prominent and popular celebrity players, which other than Hope himself included Bing Crosby, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Phil Harris, Desi Arnaz, Ray Bolger, Hoagy Carmichael, and Dwight Eisenhower – the first US President to play in the pro-am.
