Background - Bellsouth Classic
However, the BellSouth Classic is more than great golf. Since BellSouth Corporation became the title sponsor in 1989, the tournament has raised more than $11 million for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, one of the pre-eminent pediatric hospitals in America. This year's proceeds will benefit the hospital's expansion project, as BellSouth continues to support Children's Healthcare in enhancing the lives of children through excellence in patient care, research and education.
The BellSouth Classic also supports other local programs, including the Atlanta Junior Golf Association, the Georgia State Golf Association's Yates Scholarship Fund and the National First Tee program.
Since moving to Sugarloaf, only David Duval and Davis Love III in 1999 have posted four rounds in the 60s. The Atlanta Country Club had played host to this event from its inception in 1967 until it moved to Sugarloaf.

2005 Season Preview
|
 Although no player has won this event two consecutive years, Jack Nicklaus recorded wins at Atlanta Country Club in back-to-back events in 1973 and '74 and Hale Irwin won this event in 1975 and '77. The tournament was not held in 1976 because the U.S. Open was held at Atlanta Athletic Club, and the Tournament Players Championship was held at Atlanta Country Club in '74.
Last year, Ben Crane stormed back from six shots behind for a four-shot win. Trailing Lee Janzen after three rounds, Crane followed up his Saturday 64 with a course-record tying 63 to defeat Bob Tway and record his first career title. With the win, Crane became the third player to make the BellSouth Classic his first win (Tommy Aaron, 1970, and Paul Stankowski, 1996).
Janzen, who led Tway by one with the final round remaining, shot a 5-over 77 and tied for 13th. Hank Kuehne, playing on a sponsor exemption, tied for third with four subpar rounds.
