It was after an exhibition match against Jack Nicklaus, Don Cherry and Dave Ragan in 1965, that Arnold Palmer fell in love with Bay Hill, and led to him purchasing the private golf resort in 1976, and making it his family's winter home ever since. The restricted field tournament, which is played yearly at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, was renamed the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2007 in honor of the legendary golfer.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational has given a number of golfers their first PGA wins. Playoff wins secured first wins for Bob Byman in 1979 and Mike Nicolette in 1983, with Robert Gamez and Paul Goydos also lifting their very first tour trophies in 1990 and 1996 respectively. Bay Hill is specifically significant for Loren Roberts, who followed his first victory in 1994 with his second in 1995. Tiger Woods, who lives in nearby Windermere, captured an unprecedented four consecutive championships from 2000 to 2003, and also won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2008 and 2009.
In 1984, when the PGA Tour promoted the tournament at Bay Hill to elite status, it reduced the size of the field, thus increasing the quality of the competitors. Gary Koch won the title that year, having posted a final-round 63 and eventually besting George Burns in a playoff.

 In 1990, Arnold Palmer not only redesigned all 18 greens at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, but amongst many other adjustments he made, one of the most major involved the overall distance; increasing the total course length by 93 yards, which in turn changed par from 71 to 72.
With Tiger Woods so often being compared to Arnold Palmer, it seems only fitting that Tiger has achieved so much success at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Besides the four consecutive victories from 2000 to 2003, Woods became just the third player in PGA Tour history to win the same event that many times, and his record 11-stroke victory in 2003 was even more impressive considering he was battling food poisoning prior to the start of the final round.
In 2007, the tournament at Bay Hill was renamed the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Vijay Singh captured the title that year, with four birdies in five consecutive holes on the front nine of his final round helped him surge to a two-shot victory. Singh been one of the most consistently dominant players at the Arnold Palmer Invitational; making the cut and finishing under par for 15 years in a row, while also playing the role of runner-up three times.
