Glastonbury Festival or Glasto is a performing arts and greenfield music festival. Glastonbury Festival is the abbreviation for The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, and is largest in the world. The Organiser Michael Eavis hosted first festival in 1970 as Pilton Festival. Eavis got the idea for the festival after he saw an open air Led Zeppelin concert held at the nearby Bath and West showground.
Glastonbury Festival has continued this tradition and includes the Green Futures/Healing Fields area.
Glastonbury Festival was also influenced by the free festival movement and hippy ethics of the 1970's.
The first Glastonbury Festival was a small scale event with about 1500 people. But in 1971 the festival was organized on a large scale titled Glastonbury Fayre. The 1971 apart from Michael Eavis was also organized by Arabella Churchill the grand daughter of Winston Churchill and Andrew Kerr. It had first incarnation of the "Pyramid Stage" which was built from metal sheeting and scaffolding. It took the medieval tradition of dance, poetry, music, lights, spontaneous entertainment and theater. Since 1981 Glastonbury Festival continued to be held every year but was not organized in1988, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006.

Glastonbury Festival is organized at Worthy Farm in South England. Michael Eavis a local farmer and site owner along with his company Glastonbury Festivals Ltd organizes the festival. Mean Fiddler Music Group has the responsibility of managing the logistics and security as they have 40% stake in the festival management company. Every year a company jointly owned by Mean Fiddler Plc and Glastonbury Festivals Ltd, is created for managing the festival. The profits earned from the festival goes to the parent company. However the major chunk of the profits is donated to charities by Glastonbury Festivals Ltd. Many areas and stages are managed independently. Radio Avalon, a cooperative of the Trades Union Congress manages The Left Field while Greenpeace manages a field.
