Gil Shaham shifted with his parents from from Illinois to Israel, at the age of two. At the Rubin Academy of Music he started studying with Samuel Bernstein when he was seven. Shortly thereafter, the American Israel Cultural Foundation gave him the first of a series of yearly scholarships. 1981 was marked by Shaham making his debut with Israel Philharmonic and the Jerusalem Symphony. The next year he stood first in Claremont Competition held in Israel. Thereafter he studied as scholarship student in the Juilliard School of Music in New York. And later went to Columbia University. In 1990 he received the Avery Fisher Career Grant, preparatory for starting a performing career.

Gil Shaham was soon signed by Deutsche Grammophon. In the 1990 he established himself on the international platform. He performed as a recitalist and with many major orchestras gave guest appearances. His was able to prove himself with his talent. His relationship with Deutsche Grammophon did wonders to his career. With the records he has given many distinguished recordings. Two of the recording received Grammy nominations and one solo disc was recorded with pianist André Previn. It won a Grammy award. In the September of 1998, he toured to China. He gave performances in Beijing and Shanghai with principal orchestras.

During the 1998-99 season, Shaham was a part of concerts by Pierre Boulez and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It was a two week series and devoted to the music of Béla Bartók this mini festival led to a recording holding Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2 and also two Rhapsodies for Orchestra and violin. Working with Deutsche Grammophon, he has recorded many violin concertos of Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, Bruch, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and Paganini. He has also recorded with late Giuseppe Sinopoli directing Philharmonia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. The Barber and Korngold concertos were nominated for Grammy award. It was done in collaboration with London Symphony Orchestra and André Previn .

The solo discs of Gil Shaham have seen many composers like Schumann, Kreisler, Strauss Franck, Ravel and
Elgar. Among his best selling works have been Dvorák for Two. It was recorded with accompaniment Paganini and his sister, pianist Orli Shaham. With the the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra he gave a DG recording
of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. It was commercially very successful. With pianist André Previn, Shaham gave a Grammy wining disc. The disc also had a new sonata written by Previn. In 2001 a recording was released by Deutsche Grammophon featuring Gil Shaham performing John Williams' Violin Concerto. The composer was conducting the the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Gil Shaham has been credited for performing with many world class orchestras like the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. With Deutsche Grammophon label he has given more than 20 CDs and with Vanguard Label he recorded two albums of Prokoviev and Faure.

Gil Shaham lives in New York with his wife Adele Anthony who is also a violinist. He has proved himself as a violinist and has strong musical values. His seriousness as a musician has made Shaham a very sought after artist by many leading conductors of the world and other instrumentalists have shown strong interest in working with him.
