George Strait is one of the most popular male country singers of our time. Unlike other superstars, George Strait has primarily only played country music ever since he was in a band called Hole in the 1970s. While growing up in the small Texas town of Pearsall, country music became a huge party of his life, especially when he was stationed in Hawaii.
After George Strait returned to Texas, he started a band and never ever played any rock or pop music, which was quite rare. In 1979, he headed to Nashville to achieve his dream of obtaining a recording contract but he came back empty handed. Then he temporarily gave up and accepted a job with a cattle-pen company. At the very last minute, he decided he would give his dream one last try.Luckily George Strait's manager was a MCA executive and he finally got his recording contract. His first single, 'Unwound' was released in 1981. Immediately George Strait received critical acclaim and heavy fanfare. Billboard even named him the new male artist of the year. By the time the decade was over, George Strait was the top make artist of the entire decade! George Strait would win several awards over the years from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.
In 1992, George Strait took his career in another direction and starred in the film Pure Country. The soundtrack for this film ended up being George Strait's biggest selling album. When 1995 rolled along, Strait released a box set and it most certainly lived up to its description. There were 72 songs, including his hit songs and other rare songs.
To say George Strait is one of the most successful country superstars of our time would be an understatement. He has sold over 39 million albums and eighteen of his albums have sold at least 1 million.
Garth Brooks is well known for how fast his concerts would sell out but so is George Strait. The 1990s were some of his best years due to the fact at how many records he set for selling out a concert. In 1996, George Strait sold over 33,000 tickets in Phoenix for three total shows in less than 2 hours! Thanks to the huge Astrodome in Houston Texas, George Strait played to an overwhelming 125,000 people in just two shows. Before the end of the millennium, George Strait began his George Strait Music Festival that would tour the entire country with up and coming country superstars. It has even been referred to as 'Countrypalooza.' Each and every year, his music festival is one of the top ten draws in the entire country, for all types of concerts, not just country.
This year is no exception as George Strait is touring the country. Get your George Strait tickets and see this legend live on stage in 2011!
