Fun.

The band Fun is on tour this summer with the group Tegan and Sara. Dubbed the Most Nights-Summer Tour, the 2013 concert schedule will take Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost, and Jack Antonoff on the road for 39 performances. These means Fun tickets are available for five months.

Fun’s tour name is taken from the Grammy Award-winning second album, Some Nights. The album won for Best Pop Vocal Album, signifying not only the acceptance of the group by their contemporaries, but the undeniable popularity for the indie pop genre. This massive success of an album, now platinum, has had five singles, three of which have had the time to become major hits on their own. “We Are Young” was the breakthrough song for the band, going multiplatinum around the world. “Some Nights” and “Carry On” continued this quick rise to the top of the mainstream charts, each going at least platinum.

Fun is an indie pop band that emerged from the New York music scene. It all began when Nate Ruess’s time with the band Format ended. He sought to start a new band and recruited musicians - Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff - he had met while touring with his former band. With Ruess as the lead singer, Dost as the bass guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, and Antonoff as the lead guitarist, Fun began its run in 2008.

Years later these three are still together, though Antonoff had also taken on the role of drummer. In these few years together the band played the indie outlets and eventually took on the mainstream charts, succeeding in each. They also happened to have released two studio albums, Aim and Ignite and Some Nights.

Aim and Ignite did not become a commercial success but it did gain them enough notice to tour nationwide with bigger, at the time, more promising indie bands like Jack’s Mannequin and Paramore. On the road, while releasing Fun tickets, they excelled thanks in part to their sound, but also to their live theatrics. Eventually the sound caught on and the group had helped indie pop make the transition from a burgeoning genre to the mainstream.

This became quite evident with the release of Some Nights. The album released in 2012, but the first hit from the playlist came out back in 2011. “We Are Young” went number one on just about every rock chart imaginable and the pop-rock ballad ultimately ended up going quintuple platinum. The song also won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 2013, the same year Fun. won Best New Artist, though they did lose out for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Album of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal Album.

It seems only a matter of time before the next two big singles, “Some Nights” and “Carry On,” receive their own Grammy Nominations. Of course, these next few albums will likely go platinum and lead to sold out tours in the future.
