Few would have expected that Everlast would be where he is today. After a less-than-promising start as a pretty pinup boy not unlike the lads in 'N Sync, he "Jump"-started his career with proud rapping Irishmen House Of Pain, but the dissolution of that group, coupled with his hard-partying bad-boy lifestyle, did not bode well for his future. Ironically, it was when his future was nearly cut off altogether by a freak heart attack that he got his personal and professional life back together, and he returned with Whitey Ford Sings The Blues, a surprisingly introspective and powerful solo album that has more in common with Neil Young and Willie Nelson (or maybe Beck and Sublime) than with House Of Pain or any other straight-ahead rap act.
Everlast (born Erik Schrody, August 18, 1969) is a popular 1990s musician, known for alternating between rap and rock. He was the former front man for rap group House of Pain. In 2000, he won a Grammy (with Santana) for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, for the song "Put Your Lights On". His most famous and most successful song is "What It's Like" (from Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, although "Ends", the follow-up single to "What It's Like", also reached the rock top 10.
Artist Biography - Everlast
Once best known for his tenure in the rap unit House of Pain, Everlast successfully reinvented himself in 1998 with the best-selling Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, a largely acoustic, hip-hop-flavored effort in the genre-crossing mold of Beck. Born Erik Schrody, Everlast first surfaced in Los Angeles as a member of Ice-T's Rhyme Syndicate Cartel, issuing his debut album, Forever Everlasting, in 1990. When the album failed to find an audience, he formed House of Pain with Danny Boy and DJ Lethal; carving out an image which drew heavily on Everlast and Danny Boy's shared Irish heritage, the trio managed to overcome the stereotypes facing white rappers and scored a massive hit with their 1992 single "Jump Around." Their self-titled debut LP also went platinum, but when follow-ups including 1994's Same as It Ever Was and 1996's Truth Crushed to Earth Shall Rise Again failed to repeat House of Pain's early success, the group disbanded. Everlast then returned to his solo career, but while recording Whitey Ford Sings the Blues he suffered a massive cardiac arrest stemming from a congenital defect, resulting in heart bypass surgery and an artificial valve implant. Following his recovery, he completed the album, which appeared in the fall of 1998 to strong commercial notices: hitting the Top Ten, going platinum, and launching the Top 40 single "What It's Like." After appearing on Santana's vaunted comeback album Supernatural, Everlast began work on a follow-up with an eclectic group of guest artists. Titled Eat at Whitey's, the album was released in late 2000, and enjoyed critical notice even if it wasn't quite as successful as Whitey Ford. Everlast then returned in 2004 with the moody, more song-driven White Trash Beautiful.
Everlast's first solo album "Forever Everlasting" -- which was largely made possible by rapper-turned-actor Ice. T -- failed both critically and commercially. His second solo CD "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues" -- which was released a full 8 years later and after Everlast had a major heart attack -- was both a monster commercial and a critical success. His third solo album "Eat at Whitey's" failed commercially but was embraced critically, especially by Rolling Stone who reviewed the album between "Good" and "Great" and focused on it as that month's most important release. "White Trash Beautiful," Everlast's fourth solo album, was not a commercial success and received mixed reviews.
If Everlast hadn't pulled through, Whitey Ford would have been a fitting epitaph, leaving behind a respectable and impressive post-House Of Pain legacy for Everlast. An unexpectedly mature album mixing hip-hop samples with emotional, reflective lyrics and Everlast's own bluesy and at times acoustic guitar work, Whitey may confound old-school fans expecting more frat-boy party-rap anthems. But it clearly showcases Everlast's musical diversity and long-hidden singer-songwriter talents, and it will therefore only broaden his audience in the end; the first single, "What It's Like," has already become a staple on modern rock radio, a format that previously would have steered clear of a "rap" artist formerly of House Of Pain.
