Esperanza Spalding shuns the label as a prodigy, but those who have followed the ascent of her career would disagree. She first discovered the joy of music as a child, owing much thanks to her mother's college teacher, who supplied with a guitar. She entered high school with the intent to play the cello, but ultimately gravitated toward the bass. Two years later she graduated with a GED to accelerate her musical education, intending on attending Portland State University and entering as the youngest bass player in the history of the program. She pulled a 180 and left for the Berklee College of Music.
Her teachers recognized her innate talent and began touring with groups like the Boston Jazz Society. Esperanza Spalding would also join Berklee College of Music as one of the youngest professors in the institution's history at a mere 20 years old in 2005. From then on, she would split her time teaching, touring, and recording. To date she has three albums. Her first was Junjo in 2006 under the record label, Ayva Music. She switched to the Heads Up International music label and released Esperanza in 2008 and Chamber Music Society in 2010.
