Erich Kunzel who is also sometimes referred as Erich Kunzel Jr was born in New York City on 21st March,1935. He got his first music degree in music from the Dartmouth College. Erich was a talented music arranger and timpanist in his high school situated in Greenwhich. He was conductor for the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra between 1960 to 1965. He was the principle conductor for Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1977. Erich has been associated with Dave Brubeck and Duke Ellington for making some groundbreaking jazz recordings. In 1965 Erich Kunzel was invited by Max Rudolf for conducting the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. In 1977 he became the Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops. Since then he has been credited for 83 Pops recording on the Telarc label. 2006 -07 will mark the 28th season of Cincinnati Pops being conducted by Erich. It will also mark three regular release on the Telarc label 'The Never-Ending Waltz', 'Russian Nights' and 'Merry Christmas' from the Pops II. Erich Kunzel is also the guest conductor for many orchestras around the world. The Tokyo International Festival held in September 2004 marked his debut. He conducted two concerts with The Super World Orchestra and in 2006 the SWO . 2004 also marked his debut with San Francisco Opera. Erich conducted 12 performances of The Merry Widow. This production was broad casted by BBC Worldwide and the PBS which formed the part of the Great Performances series. In 2005 Erich also made his Viennese debut. He was the part of the Vienna Volksopera's 100th season and conducted the Viennese premiere of The Sound of Music. His 2006-07 are marked by performances in Asia with National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Hong Kong Philharmonic, China Philharmonic in Beijing, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra in China and The Tokyo International Festival.
Chicago Tribune titled Erich Kunzel as 'Prince of Pops'. With the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival he has appeared in more than 100 performances. And at the same time he has to his name the record for 22000 attendance. Erich also has to his name many honors and awards. From Ohio Arts Council he received the 2006 Irma Lazarus Award. The Cincinnati Post awarded him the 1987 Post-Corbett Award and the 1989 Sony Tiffany Walkman Award.
