Eric Hutchinson is widely acclaimed for his prowess as a pianist, songwriter, and performer, and has been called one of the most talented singer-songwriters that Boston has to offer. With comparisons to Stevie Wonder, Cat Stevens, Billy Joel, Squeeze, and even The Beatles to name a few, Hutchinson has also been called a major talent and a sure thing.
Born on September 8, 1980 in Washington, D.C., Eric Hutchinson then grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland. Hutchinson began playing guitar around 1995, attended Montgomery Blair High School, went to Emerson College in Boston, and later added piano to his repertoire. When on acoustic guitar, Eric plays with zest, often laying down percussive hand slaps on the strings, and has commented that he should have taken more guitar lessons, but was always more interested in playing and singing songs he knew and liked better than the standard music found in most lesson workbooks.
Eric Hutchinson was signed with Madonna's Maverick Records, but the label was shut down before the release of his album, leaving Hutchinson to record and release the album Sounds Like This on his own. The album first won accolades from gossip blogger Perez Hilton; sending it to the top ten on the iTunes Store where it peaked at number five in September 2007, while also debuting at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Sounds Like This was then picked up by Warner Bros. Records, who released it in May 2008.
Citing many influences, such as Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Prince, Billy Joel, Ben Folds Five, and G. Love & Special Sauce, Hutchinson's music walks the line between rock, folk pop, and power pop. Eric's work has also been referred to "intelligent pop" with painstakingly placed lyrics, brimming with sarcasm and wit, and "sunshine pop" with feel-good playfulness and plucky demeanor.
