‘Enid’ is a city cum county seat of the Garfield County of Oklahoma in the USA. This city was founded in 1893 during which the Cherokee Outlet was opened by a land run. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center preserves its history today.

Interestingly the origin of the name of Enid remains a mystery. There are many speculations and presumptions regarding it. At times, it is considered to be a reference to a character in the Idylls of the King by Alfred Lord Tennyson. There is another fanciful story, which is more popular. It describes that in the days following the land run, many enterprising settlers decided to set up a chuckwagon and cook for their fellow pioneers who hanged a sign that read ‘DINE.’ Some free-spirited settlers turned that sign upside down that read ‘ENID.’ And, hence the name, as they say, stuck.

Enid is located in the Northwestern Oklahoma at the eastern edge of the Great Plains. This city is 70 miles North of Oklahoma City. It has a total area of 74.1 square miles, of which 74.0 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water area. The city houses the Vance Air Force Base that was founded here in 1941.

According to the census reports of 2000, this city has 47,045 population, 18,955 households and 12,567 families residing in the city circles. Its population density is 636.0 people per square mile. It has 21,255 housing units at an average density of 287.3/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 87.18% Whites, 3.91% African Americans, 2.12% Native Americans, 1.00% Asians, 0.58% Pacific Islanders, 2.36% from other races, 2.84% from two or more races and 4.74% from Hispanic or Latino race.

Enid has manageable sex ratio at 93.1 males for every 100 females, whereas it has 89.3 males for every 100 females aged 18 and above.
