The group En Vogue was formed in 1988 in Oakland, California. It was the utmost effort of McElroy and and Denzil Foster who brainstormed on the concept of putting the band members together. In fact, both were in search of some potential singers who can work together as an original modern-day R&B women group. That's why they held an audition and eventually selected Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones. Initially the group was called For You. Then the group got its new name Vogue and finally En Vogue. The present name En Vogue was chosen because there was another group of the same name, Vogue.

Just after the formation of the band, the four members performed some songs for McElroy and Foster's album entitled "FM2". The debut album of the group "Born to Sing" was released in 1990. The album included the crossover hit "Hold On". The song picked the #2 position straightaway and got platinum too. "Hold On" was also awarded a Billboard Music Award for the R&B Single of the Year category. In 1991 the group released a remix album entitled "Remix to Sing". In 1992, En Vogue released "Funky Divas". The album got tremendous critical and commercial response. The album included some brilliant tracks such as "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)", and "Free Your Mind". All the three numbers were listed in top ten besides going multi-platinum. En Vogue again reached the top ten with their hit "Whatta Man."
In 1997 En Vogue released their third album EV3. Unfortunately before the release of the album Dawn Robinson left the group. In 2001, Amanda Cole joined the group as the fourth member. But just after Amanda's joining, Maxine Jones left the group. In the middle of 2003, Amanda Cole also left the band. En Vogue soon got a new member Rhona Bennett who is still working with the group.
