Emmylou Harris has had a profound impact on contemporary music, particularly country over the last quarter century. While playing in a Washington, D.C.-area club, Harris was discovered in 1971 by ex-Byrd Chris Hillman. In 1973, they recorded his landmark album Grievous Angel. Parsons died only weeks after the album's completion, but his profound influence on Harris would carry on. The group signed to Reprise and relocated to Los Angeles to begin work on Harris' solo major-label debut, 1975's acclaimed Pieces of the Sky, which is a perfect collection made up largely of diverse covers ranging in origin from Merle Haggard to the Beatles.

She has enjoyed considerable success recording and performing with her friends Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. She has been admired for her talent as an artist and song connoisseur throughout her career, but it was with her 2000 album, Red Dirt Girl, for which Ms. Harris was awarded her tenth Grammy. Emmylou Harris is also active in cultural conservation issues, such as the Country Music Foundation and the Grand Ole Opry. As an animal rights activist and the owner of several dogs and cats, Emmylou also supports PETA, and the Humane Society. Since 1997 she has been the most noticeable spokesperson for the Campaign for a Landmine Free World, drawing public attention and notable musical artists to the cause. On January 9, 2004, Harris and the Dave Matthews band came together on CMT Crossroads, for an episode taped in New York City.
