Ax performs duo recitals with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and played quartets with Isaac Stern, Jaime Laredo and Yo-Yo Ma. They have recorded works for Sony by Brahms, Fauré, Beethoven, Schumann and Mozart. In the summer of 2006, a project performed with the Mark Morris Dance Company originally conceived for New York's Mostly Mozart Festival with his wife, pianist Yoko Nozaki, will be repeated in Vienna and London during 2007.

Emanuel Ax (born June 8, 1949) is Ukrainian-born Polish pianist who began to study the piano at the age of six in Warsaw. When he moved to North America, in 1961, he continued his studies at the Juilliard School under Mieczysław Munz, and earned his B.A. at Columbia University. In 1997, he gave the world premiere of John Adams' "Century Rolls" with the Cleveland Orchestra, in 1998, the European premiere with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and in 2000, the New York premiere with the Cleveland Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Another concerto dedicated to him, Christopher Rouse's "Seeing," was premiered in 1999 with the New York Philharmonic and received its European debut at the BBC Proms in 2001. Mr. Ax focused on Debussy, his music and his influences throughout the 2003-04 season at Carnegie Hall. This season-long "Perspectives" series featured Mr. Ax in performances with the Boston Symphony under Bernard Haitink, with the Juilliard Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, in three chamber music concerts at Zankel Hall, and in a solo piano recital. These programs featured world premieres of three Carnegie Hall commissions.
In 2004Ã05, Mr. Ax also bestowed to a BBC documentary in ceremony for the Holocaust that aired on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and was awarded a 2005 International Emmy. In the 2005Ã06 season, performing with the orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle in Berlin and New York, Mr. Ax served as Pianist-in-Residence with the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also performed as a soloist in a U.S. tour with the National Symphony and Leonard Slatkin; recitals in London, Vienna, and at New York's Carnegie Hall; and a duo recital tour with Richard Stoltzman. A pledged exponent of contemporary composers, Mr. Ax has turned his attention in recent years toward the music of 20th-century composers. He won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, and five years later he received the Avery Fisher Prize for outstanding achievement and excellence in music.
