With the release of his debut album, Elliott Yamin (due March 20, 2007, on Sony/ATV Music Publishing's Hickory Records), hardly a few will accept this skilled vocalist was once too chagrined to sing out in his middle-school choir class. The secret was on its way out well before Yamin finished third in the fifth season of "Idol"; early in the competition, the ever-prickly Simon Cowell deemed him "potentially the best male vocalist in the history of ‘American Idol.' He came to "AI" with no vocal preparation and no real performance experience. He was in a role as the underdog, who as a child had to cope with near-deafness in his right ear and at 16 was faced with Type 1 diabetes which was even more persuasive than Yamin's status as an out-of-nowhere vocal powerhouse. The achievement depicted by Elliott Yamin is all the more significant because the singer co-wrote the lion's share of its songs. He says, "Collaborating on the songs with these talented people who've been involved in music way longer than me and who share my passion for it has been an incredible experience. I've learned so much from them as an artist and as a person. The key to writing is to come from the heart. People relate to real feelings."
The prolific ability to communicate the emotional inwardness of a love song is one of Yamin's key strengths, as is his skillfulness. Yamin describes "Wait for You," the first single off the disc, as "a ballad about a man losing the woman he loves but hoping she will come back someday and vowing to wait for her until she does." "The album is very eclectic," he says, "with bluesy elements and some pop/R&B, club bangers with hip-hop beats and very heartfelt ballads." Fans of Yamin's work on "American Idol" will be delighted to find his version of Leon Russell's "A Song for You," which Yamin's own idol, Donny Hathaway, recorded in 1971. Viewers will recall that Yamin's smoldering performance brought Paula Abdul to tears – she said he was an American idol – and moved Cowell to liken Yamin's rendition to a vocal master class, judging it "superb." Yamin's whiskey-soaked tenor – an instrument he characterizes as "raw" and "gritty," more Wilson Pickett than Sam Cooke – integrates the disc's heterogeneous flavors. The record is also applaudable as it captures the directness of Yamin's live performances and his perceptible joy to sing. It's difficult to believe that Yamin kept his vocal gifts under wraps for most of his life, after one listens to his songs.
Artist Biography - Elliot Yamin
Yamin was born to an Israeli father of Iraqi Jewish descent, Saul Yamin, and a Jewish American mother, Claudette Goldberg in Los Angeles, California . He relocated to Richmond, Virginia with his family when he was 11 years old. But then moved back to Los Angeles since competing in the fifth season of American Idol as his mother, did aim to be a professional singer, moving to Los Angeles from Virginia to try her luck. He says music was always a presence at home, especially "the golden oldies." He started to sing as a child and comprehended the genres of R&B and soul. He sang in a local jazz band and in amateur performance forums, imitating Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. He whelped out of high school, but later attained a high school graduation certificate while working in one of the many jobs he held before auditioning for American Idol. He is 90% deaf in his right ear and was diagnosed with Type I diabetes when he was 16-years-old.
Yamin stands out in American Idol as a contestant whose prodigious endowment impelled him to his worthy place as an idol despite personal difficulty, lack of star image, not much experience, and no attachment to the pop genre which was depicted on the show. Elliott was told by guest coach Stevie Wonder that he should unquestionably follow a career in music while in rehearsals. Simon Cowell even stated that he thought Yamin was "potentially the best male vocalist" ever on American Idol and later, after Yamin's A Song for You performance, he declared that it was a "vocal masterclass."
Yamin took part in the celebratory hometown visit in May 2006, the show which annually sponsors for each of its top three contestants. His arrival in Richmond was especially spirited, a tribute to his modest, pleasing persona. Yamin was annihilated from American Idol after the tightest race in the history of the show. One week after his elimination, Yamin returned for the season finale, where he performed a duet with Mary J. Blige and a rendition of "A House Is Not A Home" which, in the words of judge Randy Jackson, "blew away the judges". His duet with Mary J. Blige was also reasoned as one of the highest notes of the night.
