Vedder is best known for being the lead singer of the super-group Pearl Jam. Before Pearl Jam's initial grunge eruption in the early 1990s, a band called Mother Love Bone had built up a huge following. When lead singer Andrew Wood died, two of the band's members started a new project originally called Mookie Blaylock. Vedder auditioned for them and the rest is history. His mother, Karen Lee (nee Vedder) remarried Peter Mueller, an attorney, soon after the divorce. In the mid-70s, his family, including his 3 younger half-brothers, moved to San Diego County, CA. It was at this time that Vedder, who got a guitar from his mom on his 12th birthday, started turning to music for solace. When he was in his late teens, his mom and Mueller got divorced and his mom and brothers moved back to the Chicago area. By the time he learned the truth, though, Severson died of multiple sclerosis, which is voiced in "Alive" on the album, Ten. He eventually dropped out of San Dieguito High School in his senior year because of the pressures of balancing school with his nightly job at an Encinitas drug store.
